Does It Break The Fast?

Smelling or Applying Liquid-based Perfumes on Incense

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin & Shaykh Ibn Baz
  • The Condition: It is permissible to smell incense in a room or elsewhere as long as you do not inhale and ingest.

Bleeding From The Mouth or Nose

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Swallowing blood should be avoided.

Using an Inhaler

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin & Shaykh Muqbil

Removing a Tooth

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin

Undergoing a Blood Test

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Unless the extraction of blood equates the same amount of blood extracted from cupping.

Masturbation

  • Ruling: Break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: If the person doesn’t ejaculate then he needs to repent from the sin of masturbating, however the fast is still valid.

Nose Drops

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Unless taste of drops reaches the throat or stomach.

Nose Bleeds

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Unless the cause of bleeding happens intentionally.

Tasting Food

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: It is permissible for the one preparing the meal to taste food using the tip of the tongue whilst taking precaution in not swallowing anything.

Lying, swearing or using bad speech

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin & Shaykh Ibn Baz
  • The Condition: Nonetheless, using bad speech reduces the reward of fasting

Sexual Relations

  • Ruling: Break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: If the person doesn’t ejaculate then he needs to repent from the sin of masturbating, however the fast is still valid.

Wet Dream or Waking up Junub from relation the night before

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: The Permanent Committee of Major Scholar & Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan
  • The Condition: Nonetheless, using bad speech reduces the reward of fasting.

Vomiting

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn Baz
  • The Condition: Unless vomiting happens intentionally.

Kissing and Hugging

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: This is only allowed if it does not lead to sexual arousal. The emission of prostatic fluid does not break the fast unless resulted in ejaculation.

Cutting Hair or Trimming the Nails

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: The Permanent Committee of Major Scholar

Having a Shower or Bath

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: The Permanent Committee of Major Scholar & Shaykh Ibn Baz
  • The Condition: Nonetheless, using bad speech reduces the reward of fasting.

Applying Henna

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin

Swimming or Diving into Water

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Nonetheless, it is disliked to swim whilst fasting, especially in Sea-water – Shaykh Muqbil.

Intentionally Eating or Drinking

  • Ruling: Break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Unless eating or drinking happens unintentionally.

Cupping

  • Ruling: Break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan
  • The Condition: The Prophet said: “The one cupping and the one undergoing cupping, both break their fast.” {Sahih Abi Dawud no. 2074}
 

Taking Anaesthetic Injection

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin

Nutritional Injections

  • Ruling: Break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin
  • The Condition: Nutritional injections are considered similar to food.

Using Cosmetics or Make-Up

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin & Shaykh Ibn Baz

Eye Drops

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin & Ibn Taymiyyah
  • The Condition: Doesn’t break the fast even if taste of drops reaches the throat.

Using Toothpaste or Mouthwash

  • Ruling: Doesn’t break the fast
  • The Mufti: Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymin & Shaykh Ibn Baz & Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan
  • The Condition: However it is preferable to avoid using strong toothpaste or mouthwash as they may reach the throat.
