When should I make my intention to fast?

Hafsa cited the Messenger of Allah (salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) saying: “Whoever does not make intention to fast during the night (before Fajr), then there is no fast for him.” [Sunan Abu Dawud]

 

Should I eat the Pre-dawn Meal (Suhur)?

Anas ibn Malik cited the Prophet (salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) saying: “Eat the pre-dawn meal (suhur) because there are blessings in it.” [Sahih Bukhari]

 

When do I start fasting?

Fasting begins when the time of Fajr has entered. Allah said: “…and eat and drink until the white  thread becomes distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn.” [2:187]

 

Is my supplication answered when I’m fasting?

Sahl ibn Sa’d cited the Messenger of Allah (salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) saying: “Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of a father for his child, the supplication of a fasting person, and the supplication of a traveller.” [See as-Sahihah (no.1797), al-Albani]

 

When do I break my fast?

Sahl ib Sa’d cited the Messenger of Allah (salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) saying: “The people will continue to be upon good as long as they hasten to break their fast.” [Sahih Bukhari]

 

What should I break my fast with?

Anas ibn Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah (salallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam) used to break his fast with ripe dates before praying; if there were no available, then he would use dry dates, and if there were non available then he would take a few sips of water.” [See al-Irwa’ (4/45), al-Albani].

 

What should I say when Breaking fast?

Abdullah ibn Umar said: “When the Messenger of Allah broke fast, he would say:
 ذهب الظمأ وابتلت العروق وثبت الأجر إن شاء الله
” The thirst has gone, the veins have been moistened and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.” [See al-Irwa (4/39), al-Albani].
